8 Weeks Before Moving
Research professional, licensed, and insured moving companies.
Begin collecting moving estimates from moving companies – including a free packing and moving quote from Few Moves. PRO TIP: Do not rely on a quote over the phone; request an on-site estimate. Get an estimate in writing from each company.

Create a “moving file” or “moving binder” to keep track of quotes, receipts, contracts, and other moving documents.
If you have children, arrange their transfer of result and other school records.
7 Weeks Before Moving
Start using up food and frozen perishables
Begin sorting and purging items (keep, sell, donate, trash)
Plan a yard sale or list items online to make some extra cash with your unwanted items
6 Weeks Before Moving:
Begin buying moving supplies (unless the moving company is taking care of this for you)
Determine whether you will be doing the packing and moving or if you are outsourcing

Select and pay deposit for moving company to ensure availability
Read a copy of the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”
Notify all utility services of your move (at both old and new locations)

5 Weeks Before Moving:
Contact your health providers to transfer all health history, prescription and any necessary documents to your new healthcare provide for family and your pets.
Seek for advice from your insurance company on any additional or optional coverage needed in your new location.
4 Weeks Before Moving
Begin packing items you don’t use often. Remember to label each box.
Set aside any items such as jewelry or important files you will want to move yourself
If you are flying, make sure you book your air travel and any other necessary transportation.
Book any hotels or stops you’ll need to make along the way.
3 Weeks Before Moving
Begin cleaning furniture, rugs, upholstery that is going to be moved.
Prepare a plan for moving your pets

Put copies of pet medical and immunization records in your moving file.
Notify important contacts about your change in address.

2 Weeks Before Moving:
Hold a garage sale
Clean out your safe and/or deposit box
Complete your change of address with the US Post Office.
1 Week Before Moving:
If you are driving to your new home, get your car tuned and ready for the trip.
Prepare and essentials box: Pack things like bottled water, paper towels, soap, a first aid kit and other essentials else you and your family may need
Label boxes by contents to aide in loading and to make unpacking easier
Empty and defrost refrigerator at least 24 hours before the move
Fill any prescriptions you will need during the move
Finish cleaning appliances, walls, ceilings, floors, etc.

1 Day Before Moving
Confirm with moving company about moving date and time
Give-away, throw away, or donated any food that cannot be packed and moved
Defrost your freezer; clean your refrigerator, dishes and other dirty items
Be sure that you and the moving company have each others cell phone numbers
Ensure that every item has been packed by walking through the empty house
Turn off all lights and switches. Lock the doors and windows.
Place a floor plan of your new home by the entrance, so the movers can determine where each piece of furniture should go if they are unpacking.
Be on hand to accept delivery or authorize an adult to be your representative to accept delivery and pay the remaining moving charges
