5 Christmas Moving Tips from Santa

Moving during the holidays can be tough! There’s so much to do with the rush of the season, and if you’re moving long-distance, it can feel lonely this time of year.

Luckily, Santa has a few ideas to make your holiday-season move a little easier.

1. Make a List, Check It Twice

You’re going to need to be super-organized to pull off a holiday move and have a merry Christmas too. Get a binder with pockets, and keep your moving documentation as well as school records, health care information, and names and numbers for doctors, utility companies, and banks.

2. Open Presents, Not Moving Boxes

Especially if you have kids, set aside decorated boxes just for presents. You won’t be as likely to lose them in the truck if they’re wrapped in holiday paper. It might feel like Christmas for you when you find your coffeepot, but Santa says the show must go on for the children during a holiday move. You can even ship your presents, already wrapped, to your new address!

3. Hear Sleigh Bells in the Snow

Turn the radio to Christmas music to make the season bright. Rent favorite holiday movies, sip a little mulled wine or cocoa—in other words, treat yourself to the little things that mean Christmas to you. This emotional support can really bolster you during a move, so you won’t feel like you missed the holiday season.

4. Bring on the Milk and Cookies

Santa didn’t get his jolly figure overnight, you know. And neither will you. Indulge in some cookies and milk, buy a traditional dinner ready-made, and sip a few caloric cocktails if you like during your holiday move. Tip: If you share with your new neighbors, the extra calories don’t count.

5. Move the Christmas Spirit Along with You

Wear a Santa hat. Put antlers on the car. Say “Merry Christmas” to everyone on your holiday move. If things aren’t going very well and you start to feel a little sorry for yourself, remember the Christmas story: It’s about certain travelers forced to put up in some shabby accommodations when they weren’t feeling well. You’ll make it through.
