Check the moving company’s website
You can find out a lot from a moving company’s website – even from what’s not there. Is the website easy to find, and does it look professional? If a mover is reliable and trustworthy, you should see the company’s name, address, phone numbers and other contact information. You should be able to find their USDOT and MC numbers, which you can use for more research (see “Compare moving companies by USDOT number” below). And here’s where you’ll find details on what services they offer, such as home moving, business moving, packing and unpacking services, loading and unloading, storage, and packing supplies. You can compare these with the services of other moving companies. Also look on the website for feedback from other customers. If it isn’t available, you’ll want to find out why.
Compare moving companies by USDOT number
The USDOT number of a mover, which should be displayed prominently on their website, gives you information about how a moving company does its job. Check the USDOT number at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SAFER System. This website monitors information such as the number of accidents a moving company has and its number of available trucks and drivers, and gives a general reliability assessment. Read reviews of each moving company you consider
Look online for moving company reviews. At the very minimum, check for reviews on Facebook, Google, and Yelp. Since reviews are written by people who have moved, they will describe the work and the services provided. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask your moving company for the contact information for a reference so you can get speak directly with a previous customer.

Compare apples to apples on movers’ prices
Typically, you’ll need to call or submit an online request for a moving estimate. A good moving company will do a free on-site estimate for your move. Be sure to compare each service the company provides, and specify if you need extra services such as packing, storage or moving a car. You don’t want to get a low estimate only to find out services you expected are not included. Do they have a truck fee? Do they charge for lunch? Do they start the clock when they leave their facility? Most often, the lowest price is not the best determination of the moving company best suited for your move.
Home movers should be trained personnel
The moving labor should be experienced and well trained. You want to work with a moving company that provides regular professional training to their staff, so go ahead and ask: How did the movers get their training? Are they day laborers or full time employees? These people will be handling your belongings, and you want to be sure they will do the job well. At Few Moves we keep a full time team of movers and are proud to feature our guys prominently on our website.
